Auckland, New Zealand

In August 2016, four friends and I set out to road trip around New Zealand for two weeks. We wandered around the North Island for about a week and then flew to the South Island for the second week. Our first stop was in Auckland!

Though we had a very long flight to get to New Zealand and the jet lag was something serious, we made the most of our one day in Auckland. Check out the four things we did below!

1. Tamaki Drive
You can walk or drive along Tamaki Drive, which takes you along many beaches and out to Achilles Point for panoramic views. I was amazed at Auckland’s beauty and was anxious to see how the rest of New Zealand compared!

2. One Tree Hill
We never did fine the “one tree”, but my favorite part of One Tree Hill was wandering around the hills with the sheep. We parked about halfway up the hill and walked the rest of the way to the monument shown below.

As this was my first day in New Zealand, I was extremely excited to see sheep!

This was as close as I could get to the sheep before they started walking away from me.

I was very fascinated by such an interesting looking tree!

3. Mount Eden
Can you believe Mount Eden is a volcanic cone?! It was difficult to photograph, but very interesting to walk around. There were a few kids that decided to roll all the way down to the bottom and then had a hard time walking back to the top! The walk from where we parked to the top was a little more strenuous than I expected as it’s mostly all uphill.

There’s a walkway all the way around the cone with some more nice views of Auckland.

4. Sky Tower
Apparently the Sky Tower is the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest structure! We decided not to do the Skywalk or Skyjump, but we did enjoy watching people do it! We took the elevator to the very top and walked on the glass floors, enjoying the views around Auckland. I got excited thinking about driving towards some of the views the next day!

We were all exhausted and almost falling asleep while at the Sky Tower, so we went back to our hostel and passed out for the night. The next morning, we headed to Waitomo for some Black Water Rafting!
